Location and Territory


• It is located in the western part of the island of Lanzarote.

• Its territory is mostly volcanic due to the eruptions of 1730-1736 and 1824.

• A large part of the municipality is within the Timanfaya National Park.

 

Population


• Approximately 6,500 inhabitants.

• Its population has grown slowly due to agricultural activity and tourism.

 

Economy


• Agriculture: Main economic engine, with crops of vines, onions, sweet potatoes and fruit trees.

• Sports tourism: Especially in the coastal town of La Santa, known for surfing and high-performance sports.

• Artisanal fishing: Although it is not the main economic activity, it is still present in some localities.

 

Heritage and Culture


• San Roque Church, in the capital of the municipality.

• Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, in Mancha Blanca, where the most important pilgrimage on the island is celebrated.

• Fiesta de Los Dolores (September 15), in honour of the patron saint of Lanzarote.

 

Nature and Tourism


• Timanfaya National Park, which covers a large part of the municipality.

• La Santa, a key tourist destination for surfing and high-level sport.

• Montaña de Tinajo, a natural viewing point with spectacular views of the island.
