Protected landscape of La Geria

La Geria is a vast natural sand dune of volcanic ash (5255.4 hectares), where the Lanzarote man has managed to take advantage of such a unique terrain, coexisting harmoniously with the environment. In these lapilli fields the farmer has created an agricultural landscape unique in the world; where, based on tenacity and dedication, he has cultivated his vines, fig trees and other fruit trees. It is about digging deep holes in the volcanic ash in the shape of cones until finding the precious soil, where the vines are planted and amazingly grow and flourish. The upper edge is covered with stones from the land itself in the shape of a half moon to prevent sand from falling into the interior due to the dominant trade winds on the island. The contrast of green on the black soil creates a beautiful landscape. This area has been declared by Law 12/1987, of June 19, on the Declaration of Natural Areas of the Canary Islands as the Natural Park of La Geria and reclassified by Law 12/1994 of December 19, on Natural Areas of the Canary Islands as a Protected Landscape. It has also been declared a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA). According to the provisions of Directive 79/409/CEE on the conservation of wild birds.
